Heavy rain in Mumbai city and surroundings

MUMBAI: Heavy rains lashed parts of Mumbai and its surroundings, including Thane and Raigad, on Wednesday, disrupting road and rail traffic, authorities said.

Despite the rain offered respite from the heat, affecting life line of Mumbai suburban train network, with local services with 10-15 minute delay at the Central Railway Line and the Port from the morning delaying millions of travelers.

No reported delays in the section of Western Railway.

Air traffic at the airport in Mumbai, however, remained largely affected. Three flights were diverted from Ahmedabad to Mumbai on Wednesday due to inclement weather there, said an airport official.

The City Disaster control room said there was no flooding anywhere in Mumbai.

Guests traveling on the roads, however, reported traffic jams in parts of the city.


"Due to traffic jams, it took me almost 45 minutes to cover the distance between Jogeshwari and Vikhroli which normally takes about 10 minutes," said Desai Pagur, who travels daily from Kandivli, Mulund.

Until 8:30 am Wednesday, Colaba and Santacruz observatory recorded 48.6 mm and 76.3 mm of rain, respectively, according to the meteorological office.

The agency has predicted heavy rains in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and surrounding areas over the next two days.

With wind speeds expected to hit 45-55 mph on Wednesday, fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea.
