Hussainsagar lake clean-up project progressing is like a snail's pace

Hyderabad: The cleaning of the lake and catchment Hussainsagar project improvement area was initiated four years ago, but so far only 60% of work has been completed by the Metropolitan Development Authority Hyderabad (HMDA). Although the state government set a deadline fresh, March 2013, to complete the project, the authority is likely to miss this deadline also like some of the most important works, including dredging, are yet to begin.

Even if the dredging and disposal of sediments started now, it would take at least a year to complete the job. Some other works such as eco park proposed near KIMS hospital, has landed in legal disputes, while the improvement work is the coast is not yet over.

Hussainsagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project (HCIP) is being taken at a cost of Rs 370 crore. Total project cost 310 million rupees R is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the remaining Rs 60 crore, by the state government. The project started in 2008 and the original deadline was December 2012, but was later rescheduled for March 2013.

The main objectives are to clean water, prevent contaminants from entering the lake and maintain throughout the year the balance of water in it. The project also includes the removal of lakebed sediment interception and diversion of flows, improving NALAS, keep the environment at large lake and its surroundings.

As part of the project, decided to build a new 30 million liters per day (MLD) of sewage treatment plant (STP) in the picket Nala and upgradation of existing 20 MLD STP at Hussainsagar, sewer construction of ring around the lake and a small STP of 5 MLD capacity in Ranghadhamini Chervu.

The sources said the STP in the KIMS would be ready next month, while the STPS in Khairatabad and Kukatpally could take another two months. The construction of the sewers of ring around the lake has been completed, but trunk sewers in the cantonment area of Secunderabad have not yet been done. Nala improvement works were also progressing at snail's pace with hooves like invasions. A proposed ecological park near KIMS was stalled by a court case and improvement works in the waterfront park Sanjeeviah be completed in a month. A few months ago, the HMDA had installed aeration equipment to improve the content of dissolved oxygen in the lake.

When contacted, executive engineer of HMDA (HCIP) BLN Reddy said the dredging, which is the main component of the project, which will begin next month in the bidding process is complete.

"The dredging work will be addressed at a cost of 40 crore rupees and the agency has completed. The contractor has to complete the work within 12 months," he said.
