GENEVA: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the agreement reached between the world powers on the future of Syria must be approved by the Security Council of the UN, a move that could allow the imposition of sanctions or military action.
Clinton said the U.S. could "accelerate" its work in the Security Council on a resolution that "imposes real and immediate consequences for non-compliance, including sanctions."UN Security Council backing would permit the imposition of sanctions or military action under Chapter 7 in case of default by the Syrian regime.
"We must support this plan in the Security Council should support with real consequences, including Chapter 7 sanctions if not implemented," said Clinton.
