NEW DELHI, Pranab Mukherjee, resigned as finance minister of the Union on Tuesday, giving the prime minister, Manmohan Singh, with his free hand to redirect key ministries during the economic crisis, while increasing the possibility of major reorganization in the office at six weeks.
Mukherjee presented his resignation to Prime Minister by the end of his career as the leader of the Congress before nominations for the presidential election, so he is the clear favorite. The Prime Minister is expected to keep the ministry in the coming days, during which he hopes to establish a policy seen as a contribution to the negative perception.
Singh said that the resignation of Mukherjee, lavishing praise the outgoing minister. "Our government has an obligation debt of gratitude for his valuable contribution to the work done during the past eight years," he writes. "It's a recognition of his extraordinary abilities, and their status in public life, which had onerous responsibilities with ease and success."
