In Andhra Engineering colleges will get seat with Zero marks also.

HYDERABAD: They may have handed the blank papers, but they have qualified for admission to the professional qualifications of Andhra Pradesh. Unbelievable, but true, officials say.Twenty of the 78 students who scored zero on the entrance exam this year will get admission in engineering courses and agriculture, as they belong to Scheduled Castes (SC) or scheduled tribe communities (ST) .

According to officials in the department of education, despite scoring zero in EAMCET (Engineering Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test), these students have achieved marks rated minimum of 40 percent in the XII qualifying examination. While nine students will receive admission to engineering colleges, 13 may take other courses except MBBS. Even this was possible until 2008 when the Medical Council of India (MCI) tightened the rules.

Students dalit / tribal who qualified despite scoring zero in EAMCET medical stream can earn income in agriculture, veterinary and horticulture courses.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, conducted every year for admission to EAMCET engineering, medical courses, dental and agriculture, both public and private schools in the state. EAMCET 2012 results announced last week.Of 90.917 students writing EAMCET in medical stream, 83,686 qualified.

For students of general category, the competition is tough, with only 4,950 seats available in 37 medical schools and 1,870 seats in 21 dental schools.Andhra Pradesh has the largest number of engineering schools (671) in the country.Of 283.477 students who wrote the engineering entrance, 223,886 were classified. This number has dropped to about 200,000 since many students do not pass the exam XII.

This means that more than 100,000 jobs would still vacant engineering in the academic year 2012-13. The state has 321,000 engineering seats.Scholars say the number of vacancies in engineering colleges would be even greater as the top ranker opt for the Indian Institute of Technology.

Until 2010, passing XII examination was enough to get admission in engineering college, even if the students score in EAMCET zero.Last year, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) prescribes a cut in the rate of 50 in 12 classes for the general category and 40 percent of the reserved quota students.

The total marks in EAMCET is 160, and for general category and classification markings are 25 percent of the total.Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan, who is the chancellor of all universities in the state, not happy about the state of affairs.
Hyderabad JNTU convocation address in May, did not approve the tendency to give admission to students who do not qualify a single brand in EAMCET.

"There must be some minimum standard of classification. What do you expect of these students, who score zero to do in the classroom? Want to develop an inferiority complex among students of this kind?" He asked.

Last year, 26 of the 73 students who scored zero points were declared qualified in EAMCET. Of these, 17 gave admission to engineering and nine in the agriculture / veterinary colleges.
