Hungary's gold

It was the 13 th time a Hungarian has triumphed at the event - and that includes an incredible run of 11 of the 12 wins between 1908 and 1964.

Szilagyi is the only Hungarian fencer in the world top 50 - which is ranked sixth - and was the only representative of the country in the 36-strong field. He was also one of the youngest participating, but after four previous wins easily beat Italian Diego Occhiuzzi 15-8 in the final.

Bronze went to Russia's Nikolay Kovalev, who had defeated world number one Germany, Nicolas Limbach in the quarterfinals.

Kovalev beat Romanian Rares Dumitrescu to claim third place.Occhiuzzi 7-0 was found back in no time at all, recovered and 9-5 and 12-7, but Szilagyi was simply unstoppable mood as he became the first winner of his country title since Bence Szabo Barcelona 1992.

The contest was full of hits, none of the largest in the world five or the last two winners of the title to reach the semifinals.
