NEW DELHI: Residents of Jammu and Kashmir, may have to pay taxes on commercial and residential properties for the first time.On Friday, J and K CM Omar Abdullah, told the Planning Commission that his government would try to build a political consensus in the next Assembly on the subject, according to a source who was present at the meeting where the panel vice Plan Montek Singh Ahluwalia completed Rs 7,300 crore annual plan for the state spending for fiscal year 2012-13.
The CM was asked to introduce stamp duty in the state, "he said.Optimistic about the growth of tourism in the state, Abdullah wants to build a new golf course in Ladhakh. The CM told the Commission that while there is a phenomenal growth in tourism, which wants to project as an opportunity for increased employment for locals.There are plans to introduce the traffic light at Srinagar for the first time to manage traffic in the state capital.
Ahluwalia commended the state government for the restoration of economic activity and focuses on the development of social and physical infrastructure. He requested that the State continue to encourage private participation through the creation of an enabling environment for investment. Education, health and tourism should be given priority while working out development strategy, he added.
Advise J & K to improve the resources of income, the panel noted that the plan of the tourism sector has enormous potential to boost economic activity in the state because it generates both direct and indirect employment. Promotion of heritage, adventure, pilgrimage and eco-tourism should also receive attention.
