NEW DELHI: The decision of a special CBI court on Friday to allow GTC sacked organizing committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, accused in a corruption case related GTC to visit London for the Olympics sparked immediate protests with the sports minister Ajay Maken said he would try to ensure that the disgraced administrator, was not part of the delegation of India.While ordering Kalmadi to submit a deposit of Rs 10 lakh and a surety of same amount, the special CBI judge Talwant Singh made it clear he was allowed to visit London to the Olympic Games "only".
However, Maken questioned the appropriateness of someone who is facing serious allegations of corruption trip to the Olympics. "I think the healthiest sense will ultimately prevail. Because as I said, the Olympics is not just about participating and winning medals. Ethics and morality should be supreme. No staining of corruption should be allowed to participate in the Games Olympics. and also, (being) contaminated as manager of sports and allow them to participate in the Olympics is something that kills the basic spirit of the Olympics. and I strongly condemned, "he said.
"Unfortunately ... as Minister of Sports, I'll try to make sure that it will not be part of the delegation of India. This I can assure you that Mr. Kalmadi not be part of the delegation of India" Maken said.
Kalmadi allow reason to visit London, the court noted that arguments about the charges against him were over. "Defendant No. 1 (Kalmadi) is a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the Council and president of the Asia Athletic Association (AAA) and the arguments on the liability of its name is already over. the case load of the other defendants in the case are underway and will take time to conclude. therefore the application is permitted Kalmadi, "said the judge.The court, however, imposed a condition that no adjournment shall be sought, on behalf of Kalmadi and his lawyer would present at the proceedings during his absence.
Seeking the court's permission to visit London for the Games from July 26 to August 13 Kalmadi had placed on record the invitation of the Council of the IAAF and the programming of the Olympic Games and the details of the input he received from General association secretary Essar Gabriel.
