MUMBAI: One person died when a four-story building collapsed in the city after heavy rains today.
Gopal Bhavan building, located in Wadi Mamletdar in a suburb of Malad, yielded to the rains.
Residents of the building had been evacuated after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that the structure as "dangerous."
The deceased was identified as Chandrakant Singhvi. Five fire engines were rushed to the scene, they said. Heavy rains have lashed the metropolis since last night causing the disruption of rail traffic, while flight operations were not affected.
There was flooding in some areas of the city and suburbs.
The movement of vehicles on the road and stopped traffic jams were witnessed in some places.
"The central line trains are running about 20-25 minutes late," said a spokesman for the Central Railway.
However, Western line services were normal.
"All flight operations are normal and there is no interruption or delay," said spokesman Chhattrapati Shivaji International Airport.
