Boy lost his right eye in cellphone blast

Nagpur: A 12-year-old boy lost his right eye while playing with China Mobile as his father, which exploded while charging. The incident took place on Thursday in the village in Yavatmal district Seoni. The child, Mayur, suffered chemical burns to eyes, hands and lips. The explosion completely broke his right retina, so it is unlikely to recover vision in that eye.

Mayur Subhash Raut father took him to a nearby hospital and then to a government hospital in Yavatmal, where he was transferred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur on Thursday night.

"We immediately performed surgery to prevent infection from spreading to the brain. Unfortunately, we could not do anything to save his right eye Mayur," said Dr. Rahul Dangwar, associate professor in the department of ophthalmology at GMCH, who attended in Mayur in under the supervision of Dr. Dilip Kumre. Mayur left eye has not been affected by the explosion, he said.


"This is the second such case we have discussed. The other was last year. In both cases, cell phones were cheap, made in China models. Those who buy these phones must be careful not to overload the batteries, and must leave them when you are charging, "said Dr. Ashok Madan, head of the department of ophthalmology at the GMCH.

Subhash Raut, a farm worker, now afraid to use mobile phones. "I would ask all parents to be very wary of electronic devices, especially when children are around. Avoid the situation where children treat mobile phones as toys," he said.
