Monsoons cover entire India.

NEW DELHI: The monsoon rains have covered the whole country although still poor by 23 percent and the situation in Karnataka and Maharashtra is of concern, the government said Wednesday.

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar met here with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) CEO LS Rathore and Food Minister KV Thomas to discuss the situation of the monsoon.


Inform the press, Rathore said: "The rainfall situation has improved but is still less than 23 percent of the monsoon covers country today with parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan receive heavy rainfall.".

Later, Pawar said the situation had improved over the last ten days, but there was a deficit. "For the country as a whole, the rainfall situation is definitely improving vis-à-vis 10 days ago. However, areas of concern are Central Karnataka and Maharashtra," said the minister.



The two states have received little rain so far and the situation has not improved to the satisfactory level, he said. Pawar said that "not a cause of concern for coarse grains (bajra, jowar and maize) production and supply of drinking water in these two states."

Some parts of Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have also received little rain so far, said Rathore.

"The rains will move now to the Himalayas, Terai and in the northeast region," said the head of the IMD.

India has produced a record 252.56 million tonnes of food grains in 2011-12 crop year (July-June) in Monsoon good last year. Of this amount, coarse grains stood at 41.91 million tonnes Producton.
