Tiruvannamalai: A social activist, who had filed several cases against politicians and businessmen, was hacked to death by a gang in Tiruvannamalai on Monday.
Police said Rajmohan K Chandra, 53, a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Tiruvannamalai, was returning home on his bicycle on the morning of Monday, after buying milk for their pets.
When crossed Singamuga Theertha Kulam in the way Girivalam, an armed gang of seven to eight people who hid behind a bush, we were met and a member of the band released the chile powder in his face. Chandra lost his balance and fell. The gang members attacked him with knives, causing severe cuts to his head and limbs, and fled the scene. He died in a pool of blood.
Investigations revealed that the activist would say that he had received frequent death threats after he had filed public interest litigation and claims against those judges, politicians and police accusing them of corruption. Police have arrested five people for questioning after the mini activist's wife said he suspected the involvement of a councilor from the same locality.
District Crime Branch Deputy Superintendent of Police said four C Ravichandiran special teams have been formed to catch the attackers. "We have arrested five suspects. Councilman accused by the wife of the late activist has fled. We are investigating the case from all angles," he said.
Meanwhile, two persons, identified as D Murugan, 32, from Vadaandapattu and Chandrasekar M, 29, a Tamil from Sri Lanka are in a refugee camp near Thenpallipattu, surrendered before the magistrate court in relation Polur murder. The magistrate remanded the two in judicial custody. Police are expected to take them into custody for questioning details. Police also suspect that the deceased, under the pretext of working for a social cause could have extorted money from public figures.
A police team visited the site and made preliminary investigations. A sniffer dog was brought into use and forensic experts combed the crime scene in search of vital clues and fingerprints.
